We were still arranging manifests when the first crash came-a window blown inward like someone tearing a page from the room. The door shuddered under a battering ram of bodies and the thin peace of our safe house fractured into a hundred bright, dangerous edges. Sam's head snapped up, eyes the color of wet paper. The girl on the cot made a small sound that could have been a sob or the beginning of prayer.

"Alert," Nick's voice popped in, clipped and sharp. "Heat signatures on the north wall. They cut satellite feeds five minutes ago."
